Gnome Is Where The Heart Is! 245+ Gnome Names For Your Beloved Garden Friends
Ahh, gnomes. A little cute, a little creepy, lots of good luck. More than a funny little garden decoration, gnomes date back historically to ancient Roman mythology, spanning centuries of western European tradition (we’ll do a deeper dive of that in a minute). And, to this day, many people still believe that gnomes bring good luck and, for that reason, use them to watch over crops and livestock. But we think it’s safe to say that many people simply love having a funny little guy with a hat hanging out in their garden because, well, why not? And since everything deserves a name — including the gnomes in your garden — you’re probably on the hunt for some gnome names to call your garden friends, right?
Before we start rattling off names, it helps to put gnome history into context. The earliest appearance of garden gnome-like statues happened in ancient Rome when these little guys were less gnome-like and more god-like, representing Roman gods, and said to protect the gardens from evil spirits and ensure a successful harvest. Then, during the Renaissance, the Swiss alchemist Paracelsus started to describe gnomes as creatures with magical powers, and, well, no wonder their popularity took off. Folklore and myths about the magic of gnomes swept Europe, believed to have originated in Scandinavia.
By the 18th century, garden gnomes became widely popular as home ornaments — but only for wealthy families at that time. It’s believed that the very first contemporary-looking garden gnome that we know today was made in Germany by sculptor Philipp Griebel. Soon, everyone in Europe wanted a gnome in their garden, and their popularity has only grown (or should we say gnomed?) from there.
Gnomes have since turned up everywhere in popular culture, from The Wizard of Oz to J.R.R. Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings series to the Harry Potter franchise to gaming — although we think the Snow White‘s seven dwarves are probably the best gnomes depicted onscreen. While each storyteller describes gnomes in their unique way, they’re typically depicted as human-like creatures who live underground with some supernatural powers (or maybe they’re just sneezy or sleepy).
Did we mention they’re super cute? A gnome makes a perfect addition to any yard, garden, or even mantle. So, whether you have one (or 10) or are planning to start your gnome collection soon, bookmark these gnome names ideas.
