Anti-Vax Parents Mock Immunocompromised Patients In ER

Anti-vaxxers are basically the worst, and it seems the internet has no shortage of examples of these breathtakingly selfish and uninformed individuals making their ignorant and callous views known. A recent case, shared on Reddit, highlights an anti-vax couple who took their son to the ER and were eventually sent to quarantine to protect vulnerable patients from their dumb choices. They thought that wasn’t fair and decided to blast the doctors for doing the right thing. As selfish anti-vaxxers are wont to do.
In the r/trash Subreddit, this totally appropriate submission is titled “I’m Ready to Fucking Fight” and after reading the post, you will be too. “We had to come to the ER after an emergency with my son falling at the playground. We were questioned about our vaccine choices, then it was brought up 3 times on how we should give him a tetanus shot and then 6 hours into our visit we were ‘isolated’ in a room with gowns and gloves so we don’t ‘infect’ any of the immunocompromised patients.”
As if their idiocy weren’t infuriating enough, the couple then proceeds to flip off either the doctors, those vulnerable patients who might now be exposed to dangerous illnesses because of their idiocy, or both. They plopped in a little eye-roll emoji (which, funnily enough, is exactly what I did when I read their post) and said, “… our response. Our bub is ok, had a little surgery and he is on the mend.” And of course, prayer hands emoji for a “great recovery,” which is kind of all you have when you shun medical science and the actual measures a parent could take to keep their child healthy and free of tetanus.
So. To recap, their response to the idea that they could be carrying a vaccine-preventable disease that could make an immunocompromised individual sick is to toss up a middle finger? Yes. I am very ready to fucking fight.
Naturally, so were many furious Redditors who made themselves known in the comments.
And of course, many folks brought up these very salient points. If vaccines are so evil and the doctors who push them are just working for Big Pharma and want to pump kids full of poison, then why is it ok to trust a hospital with your son’s care at all?
Although one might argue that trying to apply logic to the decisions of a person willfully exposing their child (and the rest of the world) to dangerous illnesses is an exercise in futility. Sadly, they would be correct.
At the moment, refusing vaccines is mostly still allowed in the U.S., though some states are beginning to enforce stricter laws when it comes to nixing immunizations and mingling with society. In New York, parents who refuse to vaccinate their kids are livid that a new law (enacted after a measles outbreak) now prevents them from attending school without having received all age-appropriate vaccines. “The science is crystal clear: Vaccines are safe, effective and the best way to keep our children safe. This administration has taken aggressive action to contain the measles outbreak, but given its scale, additional steps are needed to end this public health crisis,” New York governor Andrew Cuomo said in a statement when the law was passed. “While I understand and respect freedom of religion, our first job is to protect the public health and by signing this measure into law, we will help prevent further transmissions and stop this outbreak right in its tracks.”
Bottom line, if parents like these flippant jerks in the photo want to skip vaccines for their kids, they don’t get to do so and go about life as usual. Hospitals, schools, and any other public place can and should take action, up to and including asking them to not be present at all. The science on vaccines is proven and clear — just like the selfishness of those who choose to skip them.
