Happy Second Birthday!

You did it, Scary Mommy! Happy second birth day to you! And, of course, your bona fide toddler.

The “terrible twos” get a bad rap — you’re going to be dealing with a three-foot asshole more times than not — but it’s important to focus on the ten minutes out of every day she’s so cute and snugly that her reign of terror almost seems worth it.

There is much to look forward to in your child’s second year. Her growing sense of independence leads to milestones that find her brushing her own teeth, graduating to a “big kid” bed, dressing (and undressing) herself multiple times a day, insisting she can make her own breakfast and snacks, and the mother of all things do-it-yourself: using the potty!

Development milestones, it’s important to remember, are more like guidelines instead of hard-fast rules. Children learn and develop differently and at their own pace, which is why comparing toddler-to-toddler on Facebook is the worst. However, if you feel like something isn’t “right,” it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment with a developmental pediatrician to go over your concerns and seek appropriate services.

As you celebrate your 2 year old toddler’s birthday, pat yourself on the back for a job well done (and for planning ahead with that box of wine in the kitchen for later) while preparing yourself for all the peace negations you’re going to master this year. But then again, preschool is right around the corner.
