Trump Plans Massive Cuts To Domestic Violence Programs
Donald Trump’s long history of hating women isn’t over yet
After a historically sexist campaign, we weren’t expecting Donald Trump to do anything good for women, but his plan to cut 25 grant programs aimed at helping victims of domestic violence is especially cruel and dangerous. While women march through cities across America, Trump is already working to take away protections we fought for years ago.
In Trump’s America, the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities will be eliminated entirely in addition to the Department of Justice’s violence against women grants, Mic reports.
The 25 initiatives provide funds for organizations that help end sexual assault, dating violence, and domestic abuse. These programs are crucial as twenty people are victims of intimate partner violence every minute in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And each day, three or more women are murdered by their boyfriends or husbands, according to the American Psychology Association.
Let that sink in. Every single day another three women are murdered by their partner here – not across the globe, but in good ol’ America.
In addition to helping women, the grants would go to incredibly important projects, like figuring out how to stop sexual assault on college campuses. Guess it shouldn’t come as a surprise that a man known for making lewd comments about young women and girls would reduce efforts to stop sexual attacks. Another project the grants support is the “Safer Families, Safer Communities” initiative, which would put into action the Supreme Court’s ruling that people who’ve been convicted of domestic violence can’t own firearms. By stripping the funding, Trump’s making it easier for someone who beats their partner to own a gun.
How exactly is this part of making America great again? We know he hates women – just read his hateful verbal attacks. We know he doesn’t give a shit about our reproductive rights or our health care in general. But now he’s going so far as to steal help from a battered person.
So who came up with this genius plan to eliminate help for American who need it the most? Russ Vought and John Gray, who both previously worked for Mike Pence, who, as you know, is apparently the only thing worse than Trump.
We’re all for saving government dollars. How about we finally cut some of that military budget? Or we could scrap that racist wall he wants us to build? Or maybe we can take away the ridiculously lavish benefits Congress has, like their plush health care plan. Surely if millions of people, including sick kids, don’t need insurance than the politicians supporting Trump would be happy giving it up.
There’s tons of places we can save money before killing a program that saves and protects lives.
