Dad’s Perfect Response To Finding Whiskey In Teen’s Sock Drawer Goes Viral
This dad perfectly dealt with finding alcohol in his teen’s room
No parent wants to find liquor hidden in their teen’s bedroom, but if ever we do, let’s all hope we’re cool enough to handle it like this guy.
A Texas dad recently found something pretty peculiar in his 16-year-old daughter’s sock drawer: a mostly empty bottle of Fireball whiskey. The teen was away on a trip to South Padre Island when her dad discovered the bottle, so rather than flipping out and calling her immediately to demand an explanation, the dad stayed totally chill. He sent her an adorable and hilarious video telling her he hopes she’s having fun, he loves her, and he’d like to have a conversation about his findings when she comes home.
“Hey Girl, hope you’re having a great time at the coast. I know South Padre is beautiful,” the dad starts out, before bringing the whiskey bottle into view. “When you get home, I’d like to talk to you about this. I don’t know if this is something that fell out of a sock, because it was in your sock drawer.”
The dad even offers up a funny explanation for the how the whiskey possibly could have ended up in Elainey’s bedroom. “We heard a news report of people breaking into houses and hiding whiskey bottles,” he says. “So, if that’s the case then we definitely need to contact the police.”
Mostly, though, this extremely cool dad just wants his daughter to know they need to have a little talk and it’s nothing for her to worry about. “If you’ve got another explanation, maybe you could explain it to us when you get home,” he tells her calmly. Then, he breaks into a smile and adds, “Love you, Girl.”
Elainey uploaded the video to her Twitter account, where it’s since racked up over 22,000 likes and been retweeted 11,000 times. Dozens of people have tweeted to tell the teen how “nice” and “cool” her dad is. “My dad would’ve told me to come home that exact moment and then he’d whack me in the head with the bottle when I arrived,” wrote one, reminding her that her dad’s lighthearted demeanor is definitely not the norm.
Obviously underage drinking is a big deal. In fact, the National Institute for Alcohol Abuse reports 35 percent of 15-year-olds have had at least one drink in their lives, and about 14 percent of people ages 12-20 engage in binge drinking regularly. Underage drinking can lead to impaired judgment, injuries, and drunk driving. It’s not something to be taken lightly, but the way this dad addressed the issue is totally spot on.
Instead of shaming his daughter or closing off the lines of communication by reacting in anger, this dad created a way for him and his teen to have an honest, respectful conversation. He reacted with love, humor, and genuine concern, and his sweet, measured response to such a serious issue is basically the definition of #parentgoals.
