Viral Photo Proves No One Can Multitask Quite Like A Pumping Mom

by Valerie Williams

This photo of a pumping mom multitasking like a champ has gone viral

If you’re a breastfeeding mom, chances are excellent you’ve spent at least some time shackled to a breast pump. That time spent literally milking yourself can be a total loss (also, boring and isolating) but some moms turn those hours into something a little more productive. Like this pumping mom who made the absolute most of her lunch break at work.

The Facebook page Breastfeeding Mama Talk shared a photo of mom and radiation therapist Melissa Bressler doing what pumping moms do best — multitasking.

Bressler tells The Huffington Post of her work routine that includes time spent in the morning readying herself for patients in the afternoon. She comes in early sometimes to pump and work.My coworker walked up on this scene and was so thrilled she requested to take a picture to send to her sister because they are both so pro-breastfeeding and pumping.”

After seeing the photo, Bressler decided to send it to Breastfeeding Mama Talk, a resource she says inspired her over the last year of nursing daughter. The photo quickly garnered over 12,000 likes and comments from many women who’ve been in her shoes.

The photo included the caption, “Sometimes breastfeeding means working, eating, pumping at the same time. #multitasking at its finest. #workingmom #momlife #allformybaby.”

Let’s break it down real quick. Like any pumping mom worth her salt, Bressler is sporting a hands-free bra. It might not be sexy, but it gets the job done. With her boobs doing their thing, this busy mom is free to do hers and that includes catching up on some computer-ing and eating her lunch. With the total time suck that comes part and parcel with pumping (suck…pumping…see what I did there?), there are moms who make the best of it and try to get something else done while they’re acting as a milk machine.

As a mom who spent several months exclusively pumping, I am in awe and feeling a little bit lazy. I used to spend my pumping sessions catching up on DVR’d episodes of “CSI: Miami” (I still feel a tingling in my boobs when I hear David Caruso’s voice….or The Who) and was otherwise wholly unproductive. At the time, it just felt right — I was an exhausted new mom with very little time to myself, so I used my daily pumping time as a chance to relax a little.

Well, as much as a girl can relax with suction violently tugging her nipples into a plastic shield over and over and over again.

And it’s totally fine to do nothing but solve TV crimes while you pump, but if you’re a working mom, you probably have no choice but to use that time wisely. And it looks like this mom has a handle on how best to take advantage of those minutes tied to the milk sucker.

Of the photo’s appeal to so many, Bressler says, “I hope women are inspired by it and know they can continue their full time mommy-job while they’re continuing their career or education.”

No doubt, plenty of women are inspired. Kudos to this multitasking mom for showing everyone what a pumping mom can do with 20 minutes.
