The DIY Bar Has Booze And Crafts, And Is The Greatest Idea of All Time

The DIY Bar, located in Portland, Oregon, is the best thing I’ve seen all year. Founded by two brothers, Jason and Adam Gorske, who took their lifetime dreams of creating stuff and building relationships within their community and turned them into a reality last March. Now everyone else can benefit from their awesome freaking idea.

Their slogan — “Join us for a craft and sip” — basically gives me all the good vibes. And you don’t have to be a seasoned crafter to have a good time, so don’t let that stop you. The DIY Bar has something for everyone, whether you can craft your ass off (showoff) or the thought of it makes your head hurt and leaves you wanting to, well, drink booze, you will find something to do here.

In fact, Adam tells Scary Mommy, “We’ve seen a mix of folks coming in and it’s always the ones who think they’re not crafty, or they may have been brought along that do some of the most amazing work.”

No one is allowed to be sad when you can indulge in a cold one or a cocktail and some gossip while you complete a DIY project with your besties. You don’t need to get it right or be the next Martha Stewart. In fact, the DIY Bar welcomes your messes and the Gorske brothers are there to guide you if you’d like.

It’s a place where you can mix and mingle and not worry if you’ve used too much hot glue or your sewing project isn’t coming out quite right. It’s about being free to create and embrace your inner craft god/goddess, even if you don’t think he or she exists.

And with $3 mimosas on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m.–3 p.m., I can’t think of a better way to spend my weekend mornings. If there are two things I love, it’s slurping libations and making cool shit.

This isn’t your grandma’s quilting or knitting circle, so get your creative derrière over there and be ready to rage. I basically want to find excuses to host things at this place: bridal shower, baby shower, birthday party, or just a classic GNO. Craft and booze, baby.

And of course, there is a happy hour: Tuesday–Friday from 3–6 p.m.

Not only do they provide the alcohol, they also have the ideas, inspiration, all the tools and materials you need, and — get this — bonus, they clean up after you, too!

You can DIY your way all over the place whether you are in the mood to construct some string art:

Concrete coasters (how cool are these?):

Leathers wallets (OMG I want one!):

And my absolute favorite, beaded wrap bracelets:

Their website lets you know how many drinks you will need to successfully complete each craft. In other words, the level of difficulty and the estimated time to complete said project. You are sure to leave with a warm glow from the alcohol and your prized possession that you made all by your damn self because you are freaking amazing — and slightly inebriated.

So please, hurry up Jason and Adam and make more DIY Bars. Clearly, we need one in every town.
