What’s not to love about Ted Lasso? Ted’s devoted to his team, friends, fam, and biscuits. He’s compassionate and optimistic. And his circle? They’re some real characters. It just makes sense to use ‘em as baby naming inspo.

Ted

Ted (or Teddy) is often short for either Theodore or William. Theodore is Greek and means “God’s Gift.” William, a German name, means “resolute protector.” No one would red-card you for either of those names.

Apple TV+

Roy

Roy was a fairly popular name in the time of our grandparents but isn’t used quite as much now. Meaning “king” and coming from Anglo-Norman England, it’s high time to see its return.

Keeley

The name, like the character, has quite an interesting background. An Americanization of a more complicated Irish name, Keeley means either “slender” or fair.”

Rebecca

Want to raise a strong, calculating daughter? Look no further than Lasso’s Rebecca for inspiration. Rebecca is a Biblical name meaning “to tie” or “bind.” Just don’t call her *Bex* for short. (Or do. It’s actually really cute!)

Grey

Color names are already super cool, but this one actually pays homage to the AFC Richmond mascot, the greyhound. Because, why not? Also, it’s a nice way to pay tribute to Earl. Iykyk.

Apple TV+

Baz

He may not be a central player in Ted Lasso, but Baz is important nonetheless. Plus, he’s a truly devoted fan who has no problem telling it like it is... even to the coach’s face. It’s a cute name on its own, but it’s probably short for Sebastian, Barry, Barra, or Basil.

Apple TV+

Thierry

What a cool, almost exotic name. Thierry is French and means “ruler of the people.” Lasso’s Thierry is a solid goalkeeper, though he usually just backup. He’s a little goofy but ultimately sweet and well-meaning.

Apple TV+

Higgins

People use last names as first names all the time. While Higgins didn’t make great choices pre-Ted Lasso’s arrival to AFC Richmond, he’s turning around.

Apple TV+

Jamie

Let’s be honest: Jamie Tarte’s personality leaves a lot to be desired. But he’s a talented footballer. Jamie is usually short for James, which is a Biblical name that means “supplanter.”

Apple TV+

Sam

We love Sam so much! He’s so optimistic and friendly. Sam itself is a perfect gender-neutral option. Sam could be short for Samuel, Samantha, or, given Sam’s Nigerian roots, Sami.

Apple TV+

Nora

This Irish name means “shining light.” While Flo’s daughter may not be on the Greyhounds, we think she’s worthy of this list.
