Did you know that The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down is not a Civil War-era song?

It was written in 1969. By a Canadian, no less. Yep, we're everywhere, I tell ya.

I really like The Band, but it never occurred to me they were canadian(stupid American, I know). Maybe because of that song, I guess. I assumed it was an old song they covered.

The Band is a Canadian-American rock band, which is of course why they're so awesome. Robbie Robertson wrote the song.

    LOL at the dong, @LLB.

My husband does this each night at dinner with our four kids: Fact of the Day. We talk about what each kid did that day- and then he also asks if they have a fact of the day. Whoever wins fact of the day scores $1 for their piggy bank.

I thought that Ashokan Farewell was a civil war era song. Nope! Ken Burns just liked it.  http://www.jayandmolly.com/ashokanfaq.shtml

Here's the song on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kZASM8OX7s

I'm very fond of that song. I also like it on hammer dulcimer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mB0VKQyaYcM
