kids just moved out, i am finally able to look at their rooms. and cleaning them. boyo's room is red (it was like that when we got here) and there is some kind of FUNK on all his walls. i just used lysol and a swiffer kind of mop thing on the walls, and as soon as it dried, i can see that funk is still on there. most of it is waist height and below, a ton of it about where the furniture was, but it's all over all the walls, some places up to the ceiling. it's some weird kind of film, not dust. and it's not just where he would have put his hands....i don't know wtf it is.....or how to get rid of it. ideas?
    i'm nekkid.

not to be gross here....but when you say "some kind of film"...could it be...ya know....

I only ask bc I find a "film" on the wall behind my own bed all the time.  It is a bitch to clean off.

    My beach is still Sandy....

Lemon juice might cut through the film. Does it seem like a dust based film, or a grease/oil based film? Hot water, lemon juice and a scrubby sponge might cut through it.

If it's mold, use bleach. It will kill it.

@Blessie magic eraser is a mr. clean product. looks like a white sponge. will take off just about anything. but it's a very fine grit sandpaper, so you can't use it on anything enameled (you know, like the tub, sink, toilet- the things you want to really scrub)

Rubbing alcohol makes a great de-funker. It will take anything off of walls, but it should be ok for paint. I've gotten years of nicotine/tobacco film off of a bathroom wall using rubbing alcohol.

Little spritz, let it sit and shit just wipes off!!!!!!!

@SchweddyBalls (ps I giggle every time I type your name) that sounds awesome.

And it takes smoke staining off of the walls? I ask because my mom lives by herself and smokes inside. all of the walls turn dingy brown within months of repainting. I'd rather scrub them than repaint them...

yep..........will clean that grud right off!!!!!!!! Last house I had to help prep had a 80 yo lady who smoke for 45 years in this house!!!!!!! It took 3 days to clean all the walls.......but its all gone, stains and smell!!!!! I've NEVER had a problem with tabacco bleed thru after painting......and never had to use a major base coat (like Killz)....... just used a bucket and a mop......mopped it on, let it sit, then clean mopped it off with plain water.

True that, muthafuckin true that!!!!!!! Between the funk of ass n' corn chip toes, the unsolved boogers on the walls mysteries and the "what the fuck did you eat" things left in the toilets.......it's a full time job keep up with the short buses!!!! Currently taking applications, btw.......

what is tsp? i help hubs paint all the time, residential and commercial, i have never heard of it. if i have been doing this shit the hard way, i'm going to be pissed.

and no, it's not jizz, or lube.... thank god.....and he had no candles, no incense, didn't smoke anything.....it's just some funky film......and if he could hit the corner of room where the celing meets the walls across the room from his bed......well, he may think pretty highly of himself, but i've watched porn, and i don't think it's possible without special effects. (ugh.......i just grossed myself out.)

at first i thought it was dead skin cells...you know....everything he might have touched.....like the funk you get around door frames and light switches, etc. i don't know wtf it is. it's not mold, it's not dust, it's not grubby handprints, it's not oily.......    @schweddyballs is TSP a degreaser? or something like acetone or MEK? you said your hubs uses it as prep before he paints? i got a ton of that kind of shit.   magic eraser...............well, in some places it's floor to ceiling.

    i'm nekkid.

ok....going to lowe's tomorrow. will it damage the paint? the paint is old....probably bought on clearance, and brick red. because i am just now clearing out the house of un-needed shit (including poppa's stuff........boxes and bags and omfg i am still finding shit he had.....address books, a binder with every tool he owned since 1978 with all the serial numbers and registration stuff, etc etc, and more love notes that he hid, that i shredded to protect his privacy behind all his old john wayne movies, etc)..............and i don't want to be distracted ny house painting. especially while it's fucking cold and wet. that will take forever to dry.

no wallpaper, just 10 million coats of bad paint, with a shitty, sloppy, drippy coat of brick red paint on top of it all. wallpaper, i have no problem with. i think he paid his grandkids to paint the house when he first moved in.....one bedroom was powder blue, badly done.......one bumble bee yellow.......badly done.....and one room brick red. not nearly as badly done...so i guess they painted that room last. we have re-painted the entire house but that room, because boyo liked it.
    i'm nekkid.

i hate MEK. it's awful. after that one experience, i won't use it anymore. it makes me sick as a dog. that's why i was asking! that shit is awful, terrible, toxic, does terrible things to your skin, fucks you up (not in a good way at all) and makes you ache for days afterwards. @willilee

Definitely sounds like it. Ugh. Looks like you have a new project @undercoverbanana.
You might want to pull up the carpet edges a bit & see how the floor looks. And if mold is growing on the carpet. This sounds like a lot of mold on the walls. Good luck, hope you find out where this moisture is coming in.

Wear a mask & gloves, just in case. You don't want to be breathing that crap in.
Keep his door shut & a fan blowing the air from inside his door, out his window.

Always used Valencia myself, mix it as strong as you need with water, it's cheap and non toxic made from oranges, after iv'e cleaned the mold off i wiped with straight vinegar. I use a spray bottle, spray it on, wipe it off, sometimes a little rubbing for the harder jobs, then wipe it clean with a damp cloth. Just be careful as old paint and water based paint will come off the walls too.

No carpet. Tile floors in the whole house. Its just a funky dusty looking film. Haven't had a chance to look for the t.s.p. Yet, but that's my project. Its definitely not mold.
